Bedrock. Fun fact: Bedrock is the "roof" of the Nether too, Nether isn't available in MP yet though.

The rock you found which is about 64ish blocks under ground level is called bedrock. It can not be destroyed by anything that im aware of.

Gold i find most around lava finds in underground duegons. However there is no real "known" location where you will find it. But again from what i have found about 70% of my gold and even diamond findings are around or 12 x 12 block radius from lava findings underground

theres a rumour that bedrock can be destroyed. like anything else it has a health bar, except that bedrock supposedly has 1,000,000 hearts, which would require approx 200,000 tnt blocks to explode right next to it.

Quote from: minecraft wiki
Gold ore is commonly found by stone blocks deep underground, in a vein of 2-8 blocks (sometimes up to 16 if two veins so happen to spawn together, and down to 1 if the block that was supposed to be gold ore is occupied by a cavern or a dungeon). It shows up at elevations ranging from 0 (the bottom of the map) to 35 (about halfway between sea level and the bottom of the map). Up to 32 it is found in 0.1% of rock, above 32 its abundance falls sharply.

They (minecraft wiki) have a page somewhere that shows what you're likely to find a certain levels but I'm too tired to search for it .

EDIT:
I lied.. I found it :p

specifically "Right next to it" so it would take u ages to destroy 1 block, its not a "fill up my map with TNT case".... although your more then welcome to try that out and post results ;o

Gold is sorta useless, I would only use it to make gold blocks.
