Ahhh.... Friday the 13th. What a great day, so much superstition. I remember when I learned why this day became known as a bad day, I thought it was really interesting. I never really had been curious as to why we see this day as bad, but it is interesting to know why. This is the second friday the 13th this year, and we have one more coming up.
Anyway... not too much has been mentioned this week, we've been busy planning for summer and getting some of the events planned out! We have some new videos on our channel, that I think are pretty great.
Plus! We've got some reviews coming up: the written review of pc case, as well as some game reviews. Gaming NewsGeneral News & Interesting Articles
Well I read up on a .. sort of interesting article today. It was interesting at some parts, but other parts I didn't care for. However, overall it is worth a read! It's about "who killed video games" and social games, like Farmville. There are so many psychological reasons for what they've done in those kind of games, to hook a person in and come back to the game. And the games are so bare, there is really nothing there. They're all pretty much the same thing, just different themes. (I never really thought of this, but it is pretty obvious if you've played them for just a short time). Anyway here is the article
! It's a few pages long, but can be rather interesting.
And if that interests you, that article led me to another one about Zynga
. It is sort of the same thing, but talks a bit more about "word of mouth" and how that really helps get the game to be known, and suck in more players! Here is an interesting quote (that is from the previous article) that is pertaining to this.
It used to be, people talked about a game when they enjoyed playing it. The businessmen whose arms may well be huge pairs of tweezers no doubt saw this and took away the information that “People talking about games leads to increased exposure of the game.” They failed to see — or conveniently ignored — that it was because the game was enjoyable, or interesting, that people talked about it. Now, they force you to talk about the game. Does that, then, make the game interesting? I’m not going to delve too deeply into the good things about social games, though I will say, with a sigh, that yes — yes, it does, ultimately, have just about the same effect as the game being interesting.
But enough of these cysts on our gaming universe... I ran into some interesting news about Mass Effect 3. As I've written earlier, and as I'm sure anyone who's played the game (or keeps up with it), people have been furious about the ending. Well one person went so far as to the Federal Trade Commission and filed a complaint! That got a lot of news, and created more talk for people... Which eventually got the attention of the Better Business Bureau. Marjorie Stephens writes about how they did technically falsely advertise the (ending) of the game:
The issue at stake here is, did Bio Ware falsely advertise? Technically, yes, they did. In the first bullet point, where it states “the decisions you make completely shape your experience”, there is no indecision in that statement. It is an absolute. The next statement is not so absolute. It states “your choices drive powerful outcomes”. A consumer would have to very carefully analyze this statement to come to a conclusion that the game’s outcome is not “wholly” determined by one’s choices. This statement, really though, is very subject to interpretation.
This is just pertaining to a small part of their advertisement campaign too... much more has been said. Whether or not it would help prove false advertisement, is probably up for say as well... However this leaves them open for lawsuits. We'll see how this goes... seeing as they're making a new ending, which will be released for free in due time.
Here is her post
Next we have EA being accused of copying Warhammer 40k Tank Models. You can check over here
for visuals and proof. It is a short but sweet article, about how a bunch of reddit users have noticed that quite a few of the tank models in Command and Conquer Tiberium Alliances seem to copy models of tanks in the Warhammer 40k universe... Which is owned by Games Workshop, whom are known to compile law suits of those who use their models without permission. We'll see how this unravels soon enough I am sure!
Ahh, I forgot to mention, Dark Souls is to come to pc. I guess all those petitions actually did something! However, it seems like they wanted to troll us pc gamers... it's coming to GFWL. It will be released this August 24... And of course, pc gamers decided to make another petition to get rid of GFWL.. We're just never happy
I kid of course (sort of) but here is the article about this
Next we have Sony! Apparently this Fiscal Year, they plan on cutting back about 10,000 people... in order to strengthen game business.
“Sony is positioning digital imaging, game and mobile as the three main focus areas of its electronics business and plans to concentrate investment and technology development resources in these areas.
“By growing these three businesses, Sony aims to generate approximately 70% of total sales and 85% of operating income for the entire electronics business from these categories by FY14.”
You can read more about it here
, and read the whole press release from Sony here
There have been some major looking updates to Dota 2 and CS:GO beta (valve's been busy, eh). You can read them here
. I don't want to post the details here, as its rather lengthy!
There was also a minor update to Dota2 today:
- Fixed Spirit Bear having incorrect damage type
- Fixed Batrider being stuck on a unit if Firefly ends on top of another unit
- Fixed being able to get two heroes during Random Draft if you disconnected at a specific time
Just fixing up some stuff that broke in the last update I figure.. can read more about it here
(tho there isn't much more!) Also! Just a note here, today some lucky people logged onto steam to see that today isn't such a bad day... they managed to pick up a copy of CS:GO for themselves, and an extra to share with a friend (or to go sell on forums..)
Also! There was an update special (Friday the 13 special!) for Left For Dead 2. Here's what was said on the blog
Last Man On EarthNew & Upcoming Releases
You will become legend to the infected as the last human left.
You are the only Survivor left in the world. No split screen help. No Survivor bots. But don't worry you aren't entirely alone. While there are no common Infected, Special Infected will hunt you down and become close, close friends with you.
While the first part of this blog post should make the results of our last poll obvious, the second place finisher is just as interesting. Between Lone Gunman and "scared to play alone," seems about 30% of you are "scared to play alone" – putting that choice in second place. With that being true, today is a great day to overcome that fear and play Left 4 Dead 2 alone with Last Man On Earth.
After all, it is Friday the 13th, what could happen?
