Arthur Gies of IGN got an exclusive look into Bioware's much-anticipated RPG shooter, Mass Effect 3, by playing a short section of the game.

Mass Effect 3 starts after the events of Mass Effect 2's DLC pack Arrival, in which Commander Shepard is brought back to Earth. The Reapers arrive on Earth and attack. Shepard is forced to flee Earth and seek out the help of other species to launch a counterattack.

Gies stated that Mass Effect 3 "plays like a shooter", and that a lot of the combat issues that plagued its predecessors. Any players familiar with the series will know that he's speaking of the clumsy enemy AI (that was mostly fixed in Mass Effect 2) and the static, duck-and-cover-and-shoot-type battles, where players took down their enemies from afar and prayed that their enemies never came close enough so that they'd be forced to use the awkward melee combat of the game.

He commented on the smoother battle controls, where maneuvering Shepard was a much less clumsy affair, and the fast movement required in most modern shooters is now a must. Melee combat has also been given a facelift since "[f]ormidable melee punches and attacks specific to each class have taken their place." The instant melee kill implemented in games such as Call of Duty has also been added through a means specific to Shepard's combat class, which is a wrist blade for a Soldier and psionic energy for an Adept.

The Mass Effect series are amazing, and in my opinion, one of the best game series of the past two decades. However, the battle system has always been a point of frustration for me, and it makes me all the more excited for Mass Effect 3 to hear that the combat system is much improved.

God, I can't wait for this game.  And if you guys haven't played Mass Effect 1 or 2, PLAY THEM!  Easily 2 of the best games I've ever played.

Mass Effect might be a little slow, but once you get sucked in... YOU ARE SUCKED IN.

Yeah you have to try to immerse yourself in the world, the setting and characters and dialogue is it's strong point.

I don't think Mass Effect could be described any better than this.

It's a world that takes a little while to dive in (as it is with Dragon Age, at least for me) but once you do, you'll find yourself 3 years from launch having played that game over and over and over again.

I myself have finished the first mass effect at least 5 times (two of which in the hardest difficulty available) and the second one at least 3 times.

I Pre-ordered BF3 the first day it was available for Pre-order on EADM and I plan to do the same with this game too. I have played all two and I plan to finish the adventure.
