Title: EA Plans to go All Digital Soon
Post by: psychockey on July 04, 2012, 08:13:27 AM

Electronic Arts has announced that they might plan to go all digital. The president of EA says that although retail is a great thing for the company, but if the gamer wants to get a game by digital download, then they should be obligated to. For now, they will currently stay with retail, but they do plan to go all digital in the future. Many people including myself, don't believe that this could entirely happen. Most gamers would rather pay upfront than download online. If this does go through and the digital downloads would happen on Origin, then the future of EA is most likely going to show lost profits.

A lot of gamers prefer digital... at least pc.  Well there's a mix from what I've gathered talking to people, reading reviews, etc.  If you go check civ5 on amazon, 80% of the bad reviews are because it is a steamworks game and the reviewers never had to use steam prior and hated being forced into it.  That will happen if they force origins... I am sure it already has happened, I know it has happened for forcing origin for me3 and bf3.

I prefer retail; but pricing's the game.  If I can get it cheaper digital, I'll get it digital. I think they want to go digital for consoles too... I've read about microsoft wanting to do something of the sort, so all games are tied to your console.  But that'll just enrage players.. what if the new xbox is as faulty as the first 360? yay for rebuying every damn game you've bought!  Or, perhaps you didn't enjoy that game and want to trade it in or borrow a friends or trade with a friend?  Well just take their console!  Trade consoles for the day; no trade-ins at gamestop!...

I dunno if they can go digital completely for anything but pc. (except make handhelds: vita, 3ds)  Not easily and without fuss at least.

i often like having my games in hard copies, so to me EA is making quite a mistake if they will really go digital, which i personally think only will happen at pc, consoles simply havent got as much space to store on

to make it worse if they went digital it would be on origin, i like have my games in one place and i do not enjoy having 2 different platforms for downloading and playing

Personally I prefer retail over digital, but sometimes I will get digital for ease of access. However, I would not want to use 2 different platforms, like zeus mentioned. It is too much of a hazard to use both Steam and Origin to play good games.

I use steam origin and desura.  I don't mind it, cause I only use two when I need to (desura and origin) and keep with steam most of time.  Desura is a great place for indie games, a lot of which you can't get on steam (sadly, but some are in alpha or beta stages). :)
